Client Name: Norfolk Air Support Unit

Norfolk Constabulary's crime-fighting eye-in-the-sky has been keeping a watchful eye on criminals since February, 1994.

The helicopter and team provide effective support to a wide range of policing activities around the county including:

- searches for missing people
- searches for offenders
- vehicle pursuits
- location of stolen property
- taking still photographs and/or video footage of incidents
- providing images and information to support planning activities

The two aircraft, a Bolkow 105DB and the AS355F2 (also known as a Squirrel) have proved themselves an invaluable resource.  Between 1 April 2005 and 21 February 2006,  their achievements have included recovering property to the value of almost £200,000 and locating 37 missing people.

The ability to deploy a helicopter to critical incidents often ensures a safe resolution  Whether due to providing an overall picture of the situation or allowing the monitoring of vehicles or people at a safe distance, air support helps deliver an effective police response.  Of particular value, is the ability to search large areas in a short time when searching for vulnerable missing people.

The unit has a small team of professional officers.  As part of the wider police team they provide reassurance to officers on the ground whose back-up may sometimes be some distance away.  The crew includes Unit Executive Officer Sergeant John Himpleman, Training Officer Bruce Appleby and Observers PC Ed Ainsworth,  PC Graeme Kynoch, PC Sara Ward, PC Ady Jarvis and PC Elliott Macrow.

The aircraft, leased from Sterling Aviation, can travel at speeds of up to 125mph.  From Norwich International Airport, where the unit is based, to King's Lynn takes 20 minutes, Thetford 15 minutes, Great Yarmouth 10 minutes and Dereham 10 minutes.  The helicopters are fully police role equipped and contain kit including video and thermal image cameras, radios and a tracker.  It also has "Nitesun" which is capable of lighting vast areas and "Euronav" which assists with the navigation of the aircraft.  Sterling Aviation, as part of the lease agreement, provides the pilots, maintenance and fuel necessary for the day to day running of the aircraft.
